Taping-wise, this show was a total disaster. We
were in a bad spot near the back. The place was
crowded and Chris kept getting jostled. Then
the camcorder battery ran out halfway through
and we realized we'd left the other one back at
the hotel, which was out by the airport. Chris
called the hotel and had the manager go into
our room and get the battery, then hired a
taxi to bring it to the Tin Angel so we could
record the 2nd show.

This is such a great show! The audience was fantasic, and
Happy, Kevin and Carl were in top form. Happy's funny and
makes some very endearing mistakes. Forgetting the words
to Hold Me was a favorite because she looked right at me
for the lyrics. I'm the one calling out "And who might that
be?" and "You'll make it!" We were in a bad spot because
people had to pass right by us to go to the restroom, so
Chris kept getting jostled. The first couple of songs are
waaay shaky while Chris is getting situated, but it gets
better, honest.

This was a corker. We'd come to New York after a whirlwind trip to San Francisco,
New Orleans, Houston and Kansas City, and we left the camcorder at the airport in
Kansas City. It was found and we later retreived it, but while in New York, Chris
had to go on a hunt for a rental camcorder. Not easy when you don't have a credit card.
He finally found a place that made him put down a $900.00 deposit. We got to The Bottom
Line and were told by the manager that we had to pay a $50.00 per show "fee" to record.
If I remember correctly, Happy paid for one show and we paid for the other. After all
that, the rental camcorder was a piece of crap, so that's why it doesn't look as good
as the other shows.

We hadn't intended to tape this show, but when we got there Chris talked to someone
at the venue who said it would be ok, so when a delay was announced, he hurried back
to the hotel only a few blocks away and got the camera equipment. He had just pulled
the camera out when the lights dimmed, and then had to pull out and put together the
tripod in the dark, so the first couple of songs are very shaky until he has everything
set up. The sound was very echoey because he was up in the balcony, but the venue
was a good size for the light show. Happy is far less dark in this show than the others,
so I consider it to be the best video of the 3.

The stage: Bestrewn with percussion instruments -- 2 or 3 drum sets (one Bob Mueller's, at least one for Gongzilla; their other percussion player was out of my line of sight), vibes (huge) and a marimba (huger). The last two were for Benoit Moerlen of Gongzilla; I was hoping we'd hear the marimba on "Ra Is a Busy God" but no such luck.
The lineup: HR vocals & acoustic guitar, Bob Mueller percussion, Bon Lozaga electric guitar, Hansford Rowe bass.
The set list (the same for both sets):
1. ? (new song)
2. Look for the Child
3. If Wishes Were Horses
- Movie Quote Quiz -
Meredith didn't get one Happy thought was easy: "I'm sorry; I thought you were a nerd. No, that's me."
4. Collective Heart
5. Ra Is a Busy God
6. Can't Let Go ("from my upcoming CD, called 'When the Hell is It Going to Come Out Already?'")
7. The First to Cry ("and then I got older and wrote about robots")
8. Just Like Tivoli
9. When the Rain Came Down
This song started with Bob over next to Happy drumming both on the doumbek and on Happy's guitar while she held down chords. Too cool.
"My new CD will be out in November, unless I decide December, in which case January."
Ectophiles I knew (or know now) in attendance: Meth, Woj, Chris Montville, John Henshon, Suzanne de Cory, Robert Bristow-Johnson... I'm sure I forgot somebody.
Attendance was fairly light.
Gongzilla was very well done fusion music, all instrumental. Benoit Moerlen was amazing on the marimba and vibes. (Bon on guitar, Hansford Rowe bass, and two other percussionists.) Hansford Rowe said that the last time the group played together at the Bottom Line was in 1980, at the invitation of Alan Pepper, and the place was full. "What happened to fusion music?"

===================

Just wanted to let you know that HR will be doing the RAINN benefit at The
Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. The concert is Sunday, September 7th, 2003. The other
performers are Emm Gryner and Terami Hirsch. Go to
www.atthepoint.com/events.htm for
more information
=
Wow. Just...wow.
Happy was spectacular tonight at The Point for the RAINN fundraiser.
She played:
Fall (a new song that, in its finger-picking, reminded me of "Just Like Tivoli")
S.O.S
If Wishes Were Horses
Look For the Child
chosen One
Ashes to Ashes
Feed the Fire (tribute version)
When the Rain Came Down
Happy performed first of the three artists, and frankly I felt bad for the other two for having to follow her on stage. I later decided that Terami and Emm were different enough from Happy that they didn't need to be following Happy; they were simply doing their own sets...and besides, they both held their own....as much as anything can against that voice.

===================

There may be more coming, but we wanted to get these up ASAP.

I was luck enough to be able to make it to The Second Floor Gallery to see Happy and just got home. I also got to meet Happy (it's a small place, with aprox. 40 people there), as well as our own Mark.
The Second Floor Gallery is just that, a art gallery on the second floor of an old church. The owner told me he is taking over the first floor as well, and will then offer more music upstairs, as well as art studios and a coffee house downstairs. Quite an eclectic collection, mostly from local artists. I nearly bought a pin for my wife's birthday, but realized I couldn't afford it...
Alan Pollard opened the evening with an 11 song set, the last few including an upright bass player (whose name I missed) and Bon Lozaga. Apparently, Alan is local to the Harrisburg area, and is a professional builder. He had invited many of his clients, and spoke to them frequently. This was a bit disconcerting to those of us who had never seen or heard him before. He did put free copies of a 3-song preview CD on each chair, advertising his CD due in January. Funniest moment (for me) was when he was explaining how nice this seemed to him, as the night before he had been standing in front of 120 people who were there to see Happy and not him, and that they had seen him only as an annoyance. Someone behind me said, in a loud stage whisper, "And this is different how?" which was unkind but nearly made me laugh out loud.
Happy came on a little after 9:00 with her band (Bon Lozaga, Hanny Rowe, Bob Muller) and did a total of 12 songs. I'll offer a set list, but I'm one of those guys who listens to the CD's without the case or booklet, so I don't actually know the names of all the songs; I'll do my best:
Look For The Child
Fall [on the new CD]
Ra is a Busy God
To Live in Your World
?I Can't Let It Go
Ali - Hanny Rowe song on 'No Other'
Save Our Souls
Never Been Me
The Chose One [new CD]
When the Water's Gone - Hanny Rowe song
Synergy
When the Rain Came Down

So I went to see Happy Rhodes for the first time tonight, in Pittsburgh, and she asked me to say hello to the list for her. It was a great time, but the turn-out was pretty terrible, maybe 10 people. :( She figured it was a good practice session at least, and of course we got to meet.
Happy's set list (from memory):
Look for the Child
Fall
Ra is a Busy God
To Live in Your World
Can't Let Go
Ali [Hansford Rowe]
Save Our Souls
Collective Heart
Ashes to Ashes (she dedicated it to me :)
