This is what he said about them:

"At number ten, Road to Perdition's Sam Mendes visits a mythic landscape of the American gangster, with great acting and cinematography.

In ninth place, 8 Mile. Yes it may be have been an Eminem image overhaul but for me it worked. In this role at least the rapper certainly showed he could act.

Eighth place is taken by Roman Polanski's Holocaust drama The Pianist, a harrowing tale of human survival brilliantly portrayed by Adrian Brody.

At number seven, Mira Nair's energetic Monsoon Wedding. Honest, unvarnished, a brave film that doesn't cop out, a valentine to modern India.

Number six, Mike Leigh's observational skills admirably displayed in All or Nothing. So much drama and so much emotion, expertly drawn from seemingly ordinary lives.

Number five, About Schmidt, Jack Nicholson deeply engaging as a midwestern retiree trying to make sense of life in another strong Alexander Payne satire.

Number four, the Hours. Credit must go to David Hare for pulling off a brilliant adaptation of a difficult book. Dark subject matter is brought to life by three great actresses in a film that is ultimately very life-affirming.

Number three, the Mexican coming-of-age tale and road movie, Y Tu Mama Tambien. Direct, simple, honest story-telling, the personal cleverly intertwined with the wider world.

Number two, Far From Heaven. Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid both outstanding as a married couple leading bogus lives because of social oppression, in Todd Haynes' exquisitely wrought ode to 1950's Women's pictures.

And my number one film of the year is Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Better than the first picture, Peter Jackson deserves all the credit he is getting for creating this masterful epic, a challenging, human story that respects our intelligence but left me totally spellbound by the magic of cinema."
So... anybody out there who hasn't read the book, I want to hear from you. I can't really ask if the movie is better or worse without knowing the book. But I am interested in knowing: how memorable are the characters? Who is the most memorable, who is implausible? And what part of the movie grabs you the most?
I'm not exactly what you want, because I have read the books, but I had NOT read the books the first time I saw the movie. I'm proof positive that reading the books is **NOT** a prerequisite for enjoying the movie to such an extent that it would be considered a great film upon first viewing. I was SO clueless before seeing the movie that if you'd asked me a week before it opened to name some characters in it and what the basic story was, I would have hemmed'n'hawed "...is there a Frodo in it? I vaguely remember something about "Frodo lives." Something B...B...B...ends with o....ah, Bulbo? No, Bilbo. Bilbo? Is that right? Don't some guys have to go somewhere to get a ring and take it somewhere for some reason? Hobbit? What's a hobbit? Gandalf? Yeah that name is slightly familiar. Gandalf's in it? Who is he?" (cringe cringe cringe, but hey, I never got into fantasy literature or knew anyone who was into it! Though, come to find out later that my husband had read the books about 12 times when he was a teenager. He just never ever talked about them.)

I went to see the movie because I liked Peter Jackson, and this was the first chance I'd had to see a new Peter Jackson movie in the theater on opening day. It had NOTHING to do with the fact that it was Lord of the Rings. I'd heard it was getting good pre-release buzz and reviews and thought "ah, good for him, he deserves it" but it was just another movie to me. Slightly more special than normal but only because of the director. I wasn't *excited*. Not months before, not a week before, not the day before, not while standing in line waiting for the doors to open. (inner airhead dialogue) Wow, a lot of people here, I'll bet they all read the books. I wonder what's opening on Friday. I'm glad Chris got here early to get seats, he must be up at the front of the line. There are hundreds of people here, but I bet I don't know one soul in the line except Chris. I heard this was a good movie, I'm happy for Jackson. He could use a hit. What do I have in my bag to read while waiting? misc blah misc... Oh, the line's moving, they're letting people in...good, I wonder what's opening on Friday...I wonder how they want me to do that job tomorrow...gotta finish buying Christmas presents...blah misc blah...inside the theater, good, it's warm in here, better go pee (heard it was a long movie)...good seats, cool...what do I have in my bag to read until the lights go down...ho hum...man this place is full...hum ho...I wonder what's opening on Friday...blah blah ah, pre-movie ads & trailers...it's about time...lights go down, screen goes black...eerie sounds....beautiful music, ethereal voices singing far away...ooh, this is nice!...whispering, whispering in a language I don't understand...gasp, oooh, cool!...a voice, "The world is changed. I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air." OH MAN! (that's Cate Blanchett's voice, nice) "Much that once was is lost. For none now live who remember it..." ethereal violin begins playing a stunningly beautiful mournful melody...OH MY GOD!!

From that point on, I was engrossed, enchanted, utterly and completely MESMERIZED, filled to the brim with all the awe and wonderment that you can imagine. For every single second of every single minute of the entire film. Not knowing what would happen next...on the edge of my seat, not wanting to breathe or even blink for fear I'd miss something. I was SO into it that I felt HIGH when it was over. I felt like dancing and singing and shouting out that I'd just seen one of my all-time favorite films. Most of all, I DESPERATELY wanted to see it again. Immediately. If the rest of the day's shows weren't sold out, I would have gone right back in. Scenes kept flashing through my mind, all jumbled together. I knew exactly what had happened, but I wasn't quite sure who it had happened to and where it had happened. As soon as I got home I pulled out my husband's old copy of The Hobbit and started reading. Usually I just say that I kept reading until I'd read the whole thing, but to be honest, the next day, in the cold light of day, I questioned what I'd felt. Hmmm, hobbits? wizards? elves? I guess it all is a bit silly, huh? I felt a bit silly. But, I still wanted to see it again, and it was that second viewing that told me what I'd felt the first time was NOT a fluke, or temporary insanity. It was real, and it happened again. That's when I took up The Hobbit again and continued reading. And reading. And gloriously reading, right through to the end of Return of the King.

How memorable are the characters? There were so many and each one was fascinating to me.

Sorry. It just bothers me, a bit, when Tolkien fans start getting defensive about the movie and say well, maybe if you'd read the books first, because it diminishes the movie. It works for some people. It doesn't work for others. That's fine. But I'm here to say that not everyone HAD to have read the books first, or indeed, know anything at ALL about LOTR, to get sucked in and come out the other side thinking, excuse me, KNOWING, that it was A Great Movie. A shame, really, because NOW I feel all the excitement and impatience of wanting to see the next two parts right now. This minute! Yesterday!! I want to be watching Return of the King for the 20th time. The Extended Version on DVD! I want to have watched the marathon of all 3 last weekend! So I can do it again THIS weekend! Dammit!!

It would have done better box office in the US and possibly Canada if it had been marketed as a mainstream movie rather than being marketed as an art film. But of course, it couldn't have been marketed as a mainstream movie because of the sexual content. Juvenile sex farces such as American Pie are ok, while realistic situational comedy/dramas containing a lot of sex such as YTMT are forbidden. But YTMT wasn't forbidden, anyone could have gone to see it, and teenage boys everywhere would have loved it (at least until the kiss at the end), but they didn't know about it or go see it because it was perceived as an art film. If YTMT were marketed as a mainstream film, it would have been condemned and picketed and talking-headed all over the place, which would have upped its publicity and made it a hit, but it was ignored because it was buried as an "art film." Weird circular stuff. I'm getting a headache. If someone can sort through that and pluck out a coherent thought, be my guest.

In any case, it's an interesting coming-of-age slice of life movie, and would still be so even if all the sex were cut out, but the sex was an important part of the process.

If it's a film I know I want to see no matter what (any of my favorite directors, a subject I'm extremely interested in) I generally don't read any critics until after I've seen a film. I sniff around to get a feel of what the general consensus is. If the vibe (technical term there) seems negative, it can sometimes make the difference between full price opening day or matinee in the following days. Sometimes the vibe is so loud I can't ignore it and then I start skimming to see what the complaints are, and if it's bad enough, it can keep me from seeing the movie at all.

Case in point: Tim Burton was one of my favorite directors. I was dying to see Planet of the Apes before release, but upon release, the negative vibe was so loud that I had to delve deeper. Negative reviews were everywhere and my anticipation dropped to nil. I ended up not seeing the movie at all. I did buy the DVD, but it still sits on the shelf, unwatched.

=== Is not as great as pseudo-intellectuals wan't you to believe. "Wan't" is the key word. ===

"Wan't"?? That's not even a word.

=== Mainstream audiences didn't miss the point, the director missed the point of his target audience. ===

His "target audience" was anyone who wanted something different from the kiddie/teenage output.

=== Who is he gearing this too? Science Fiction or Romance enthusiast or Drama or was this an attempt to make more money for them.===

"to". Why does it have to be put in a box and sold to one group like an MTV focus group? Do you honestly think this movie was made strictly to make money? If that were true, there would be a bunch of razzle-dazzle special effects, and guns, lots of guns. (that's not a rip on The Matrix, I like The Matrix).

=== Solaris the remake is NOT the best thought provoking film since 2001:Space Odysessy, there have been a few since 2001: Space. ===

Nobody has said it was.

=== The problem is that the viewers are not discrediting Stanislaw Lem or the Original Solaris. What they are saying is, Solaris was just a bad attempt at a remake, ===

Who is saying that? Where are they saying it?

=== If they(the producers) had spent more time promoting the movie as what it should have been,===

Here we agree that the studio has been horrifyingly stupid in their marketing. Clooney himself has railed against the marketing. The studio should be commended for making this movie in the first place, but then they got scared, and had to use the butt thing to get publicity.

=== then "mainstream audience" wouldn't have responded so negatively to the film. ===

This is just silly. By my calender, it's Thursday November 28, 2002. The movie opened yesterday, Wednesday November 27, 2002. You're basing this on the box office receipts of ONE DAY??

While I have no doubt that the mainstream are too stupid to give something like Solaris (either version) a try, isn't it just a BIT early to say something like that?

The studio and Soderberg can't win. On one side they've got the moronic mainstream who don't want movies that make them think, and on the other side they have snooty elitists who don't think that any "classic" should be remade and will boycott it because the very idea offends their sensibilities. That leaves a narrow middle of people who like all kinds of movies and who want to support ANY attempt to provide the movie marketplace something out of the ordinary.

That's me. I'm off to see Far From Heaven and Solaris. Have a good day.

My husband and I are going through our back room and are finding other things that we're setting aside. A couple of computer bags (pretty nice), some books (and several newspaper and magazine articles) about Diana...lots more to go through.

Hubbard was a lying, asshat bastard! (just so you know where I'm coming from.)

I have several Hubbard "Management Series" books that were given to me by another anti-$cientologist who was moving. I don't know why I took them. I think Hubbard is a disgusting piece of slimy filth, and his followers are deluded idiots (or just willfully ignorant, at the very least). I guess I thought they might be useful for some reason or another (looking up quotes or something). The thought processes behind them are so disgusting that I haven't even wanted to touch them though. Now I want them out of my house. We're moving and I'd rather see them in a colorful bonfire than have to move them again.

No takers, and the nasty things are out the door and out of my $cientology-hating life.

They're big, they're stupid, they're heavy, and there's a lot of them. (maybe 15 or 16, I haven't checked). There's also a set of "TR" tapes. They're free, of course, to anti-$cientologists. I'd charge $cienos $500.00 per book if I thought I could get away with it. They're stupid enough to pay it. They're also lawsuit-happy enough to give me grief over selling them. Bastards.

Want one? Nope, gotta take 'em all.

Want 'em all? Gotta come get 'em. I don't have a car and wouldn't haul these things anywhere anyway. That's the whole point of giving them away before we move.

Anti-$cieno? Good, but you gotta prove it. Tell me the sad, sordid, ridiculous story of Xenu and why Hubbard is a dickhead. Gotta make me BELIEVE it before I let you into my home (well, it won't be my home for long, but I still have standards).

$cieno? Wake up!!

Since the post you saw, I got another account that gives me
500mb. I still filled it up right away, but it was a heck of a lot better than
10 mb. Thanks for the offer though! It certainly could come in handy.

I tried to access ftp://158.38.89.220/music/mp3/Happy Rhodes/01 Rhodes 1/01 - Happy Rhodes
- Rainkeeper.mp3 but it said I didn't have permission. What did I do wrong?

How much space do you have? I would love to put up more live stuff, now that
I'm able to make wavs and mp3s from it, but I don't have room, which is why I
only put up 4 songs from that show, instead of the whole thing. Do you have lots
of room, or no room? If lots...(she pauses questioningly) :-)

I have the CD by the Psychowelders ripped. They also have some cassettes, which
I'm going to make into mp3s. Your note reminded me to dig out the cassettes.

Talk to you later,
